Firstly, it had shown the media’s role as a fourth state. Other than his gay bar visit and double life that is ambiguous to call it “wrongdoing”, Seven Network has reported he misused ministerial money and car for his own purpose, which is clearly an issue. Before the coverage, Mr Campbell resigned, and it is clear that Channel 7 worked as a watchdog to the government.
Secondly, the changing role of audience was significant. In the past, audiences were recipient of news from media organisations, and they mostly just accepted the news angle from the media organisations. In this incident, public’s opinion was mostly against the Seven’s coverage. It has shown that publics have a more opportunity to express their opinion to the media organisations.
Thirdly, the aspect of citizen journalism and blog news is emphasised. After the coverage, many of the blogger and citizen journalists made their opinion about the coverage on the internet. The opinions of gay journalist were particularly significant.
